The new government in India has selected education as its primary focus. It makes sense because it is probably a critical sector of governance that needs to be fixed. During 1960s, the focus was different, it was to secure the nation and have enough food supply to feed the huge population of India. Lal Bahadur Shastri epitomized it when he raised the slogan – Jai Jawan, Jai Kissan. In 1998, Atal Behari Vajpayee extended the slogan when he said Jai Jawan, Jai Kissan, Jai Vigyan after India conducted nuclear tests in May 1998 to celebrate the rise of Indian scientists. In between 1960 and 1998, there was another revolution which probably was not captured by the slogan; it was the opening up of the Indian economy by Finance Minister – Manmohan Singh . It was highly unpopular idea at the time, but it has made such a huge impact on India’s standing in the world. Today, we are amongst the fastest growing countries in the world. Probably the slogan should say Jai Jawan, Jai Kissan, Jai Vyapaar, Jai Vigyan. This simple slogan captures the history of India after independence as succinctly as possible. It is about growth, it is… Continue reading

Google ranks a webpage based on number of other webpages that link back to the webpage. So a webpage that is linked to by more webpages ranks higher than one that is linked by fewer webpages. The idea is simple and relates to our ordinary lives. I call this “met him, seen her” philosophy. As one becomes more important in society, one becomes more popular at the same time (that is more and more people come to know you). So if you can count the number of people who know you, it gives a measure of your importance to the society.
That is the core idea behind Google search. I dont want out Google down by trivilizing stuff. I am one of the biggest fans of the company. It is because Google implemented these simple ideas impeccably and created something so useful and literally changed our world for the better.
So what Google does is great job of organizing information. However, information is only bits. It is useful only when it becomes knowledge. Information becomes Knowledge when it becomes a concept in your brain that can be applied to real life problems. That is where BigGyan comes in. We go… Continue reading
Until the British came to India, education in India was primarily dominated by Guru-Shisya parampara (Teacher-student tradition). The epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata aptly capture the education environment in such times. Guru (the teacher) imparted his knowledge to Shisyas (the students) and was considered above God. The single biggest advantage of this system was deep bonding between teachers and students as a Shisyas used to dedicate his 10 to 15 years serving and living with the Guru in a Gurukul. The only monetary benefit that Guru received was the Guru Dakshina. However, only a handful of Shisyas could be educated by the system. Mostly because the economics of the system were not good enough to be a success. Also many parents did not want to be separated from their children for 10-15 formative years of their lives. Moreover, the education was very much dependant on the Guru, in terms of what he wanted to teach or knew. Students/parents had no say at all as far as the course curriculum was concerned. In most scenarios students/parents didn’t even had any preference as they didn’t knew what was useful. This system of teaching continued pretty much till the advent of British… Continue reading

BigGyan launches Word Censorship to its eLearning platform
iSilkRoute Software Technologies reboots Education
April 1, 2010:
BigGyan today launched Word Censorship in their eLearning platform. Their cloud eLearning platform has been serving hundreds of institutes in India and abroad. BigGyan provides students and teachers an alternate way to communicate using online forums, chat, web-conference integrated with BigGyan. Students use these tools to chat as to how was the day, discuss their problems related to topics taught on that day or regarding homework and assignments. These are extremely useful tools especially during exam times as students can discuss out problems sitting at their homes just like they do when they are in classroom. Teachers can also help them during exam preparation sitting at their homes.
According to Diipak Gupta (CEO), “It is important to provide students with a safe online environment as it is done for them in classrooms. Students and their parents must be told that same rules will apply in chat rooms, forums and web-conferences as are applied in classroom.”
Word censorship is an important step towards that. This enables certain selected words to be “blacked out” in the flow of the text… Continue reading

However, the rules of creating web presence are different from the ones that work in normal world. Internet is all about starting early and targeting right. The early you start more websites will link to your website making your website more relevant, which makes the website appear higher in search results of search engines like Google. What good is a website which does not have considerable number of visitors? Further, it is extremely important to build online presence professionally. The people and the companies who ignore this fundamental business reality have and will lose huge amount of time and money. Today, IBM could have been in a position where they controlled the whole personal computer business (Microsoft plus Apple plus more). They lost the crucial first mover advantage to Apple. By the time they came to their nerves, Steve Jobs had got them labeled as uncreative, near-sighted, bureaucratic company and reduced them to a wannabe in PC business. From being the top company in technology business for about 50 years, IBM came to a near bankruptcy in early 1990s. Luckily, IBM got a second chance in 1990s when internet started to pick up lot of traction. And this time IBM did not screwed up. Under Louis V. Gerstner, IBM refocused its strategy that brought it back from brink of disaster.
Every age has a rage, for this age it is Internet. No matter what business you are in, internet is making everybody change. The bottom line is either you change with it and use it to your benefit or you will be eliminated from the business. As with any major technology, Internet has some issues too. Bernard Howe… Continue reading
