Story telling is one of the oldest art forms that have ever come into existence. In the past, tribes used to gather around and tell stories about their gods, their history, and their legends. This was how so many things were taught and passed down from the elders to the younger generation. This is also a great thing to use or incorporate into an elearning tools generated module. This is important with elearning because a lot of elearning modules tend to just relay information in a colorful but not exactly meaningful way.
So what is it in the story that makes it such an effective teaching tool? Well, a story not only gives flavor to the lesson, it gives it life. It gives structure to the learner’s experience of the lesson. What are its implications? How would real people probably react when faced with its issues? Why does it matter to anyone? And more abstractly, how does it feel, taste, look like, smell, and or sound like?
This does not mean that one has to use a story in every lesson. But one must think in terms of a story. Getting the flow of a lesson module can… Continue reading

1. Client Demand: The provider’s clients have started demanding eLearning solutions (and training providers want to retain them). This is a pure survival and growth reason. Undoubtedly, in the current economic situation there is a BIG push for training companies to move towards eLearning. 2. Cost of Training Delivery: To reduce cost of delivery for training companies and their clients. This is mentioned universally and has come into focus even more due to the recession where budgetary constraints (especially on travel) have impacted the off-take of classroom training in big way 3. Flexibility: Increase flexibility of access (anytime, anywhere). Most training companies mention it’s becoming difficult to pull employees out of their jobs for 2-5 day instructor-led sessions. With managers forced to do more with less people (several organizations have retrenched people) letting anyone off for even a day can become difficult. 4. Increase delivery options: Blended learning options to cater to the unique requirements of different clients. Some want more eLearning and some want less of it, others want mobile learning. This helps training providers reach client companies who otherwise had not been able to afford their classroom training – opening up a new stream of business. 5… Continue reading
The world has completely turned and the hinge was the internet. It has truly created so many opportunities for people and industries to develop in ways that were once unimaginable. One good example of such a development is the rise of elearning solutions. These tools are software or programs that help people who are too busy or pressed for time to learn online.Elearning on its own has such a wide definition since it has also a very wide variety of applications. Elearning can also be spelled as e-learning and it was derived from the phrase “electronic learning.” It refers to different fields of technology based learning. Basically, with the help of the internet, not only is learning made more accessible and easier for a lot of people, it also helps speed up the learning process since the medium is made more animated, interactive, and illustrative with the use of the right technological know-how. At the most basic level, elearning can simply be described or defined as learning with the help of electronic technology. Any one who wants to take advantage of this kind of system would do well to think about what specific type of TEL or technology enhanced… Continue reading
Are elearning solutions effective in teaching the humanities? Could this mode of teaching where in the teacher is either far away or completely absent, be a complete experience of learning? How could students possibly learn much about art for instance? What we can learn is limited by the ambit of our experiences and of the media that we are exposed to. Usually, the best media that creates a deep imprint on us is good Literature. However in order to appreciate good literature, we must in turn have already seen what we have read at work in our own lives, even for just a glimmer of this sight is enough and literature will awaken and deepen that glimmer of insight. But if we have not at all seen any part of ourselves or our lives in the text, then the text will never come to life. And this is applicable to teaching as well. What is taught in any humanities classroom, especially if these things have something to do with the profundity of human experience (I am speaking primarily of literature, philosophy, psychology and the arts) but such human profundity of insight can be seen in every humanities subject such… Continue reading
Elearning is, in short, technology supported learning. There is no face- to- face interaction like in a traditional classroom and learning takes place through the use of electronic means like computer or mobiles.
It can involve a large variety of equipments; so the instruction or content can be delivered on CD ROMs, DVDs, internet or LAN in companies. One can say that elearning is basically internet and computer based learning. Yet, Elearning is broader than terms like online learning or computer based learning because as the name suggests, online training only involves the use of internet and intranet and not CD-ROMS or DVDs.
Elearning is a form of distance learning; however it can used along with face to face teaching. Though, distance learning is many years old, elearning history is somewhat new but the underlying concept of both are same. In both, the learning takes place outside the traditional classroom and student and instructor are separated by physical distance.
Elearning history is almost as old as the age of personal computers. As more and more personal computers grew in number, the idea and concept of elearning emerged. Initially, Computer based learning emerged where the content and… Continue reading
Elearning is only slightly different from the traditional kind of learning. Of course, elearning tools can make this mode more convenient for both the student and the teacher. The danger of course, is that it is too convenient that it makes people lazy. It can be boring or ineffective if not handled properly. So here are a few ideas that would improve the effectiveness of elearning for everyone.Creating Connections between the Lesson and the Real LifeThe thing that elearning lacks most of the time is a connection between the lesson and the personal world or experiences of the student. This is because elearning distances the teacher from the student. This is after all the teacher’s job. But this does not mean that it cannot be done in elearning. Perhaps the best way for such an element to be inserted into the electronic module is by use of vivid examples that would most likely connect with your students or trainees. If the course is about customer management for example, getting short, real testimonials from those who have had experiences with such matters will be a great addition.Challenge the LearnersElearning should not be spoon-feeding. Most of the time, teachers or trainers… Continue reading

The people and the companies who ignore this fundamental business reality have and will lose huge amount of time and money. Today, IBM could have been in a position where they controlled the whole personal computer business (Microsoft plus Apple plus more). They lost the crucial first mover advantage to Apple. By the time they came to their nerves, Steve Jobs had got them labeled as uncreative, near-sighted, bureaucratic company and reduced them to a wannabe in PC business. From being the top company in technology business for about 50 years, IBM came to a near bankruptcy in early 1990s. Luckily, IBM got a second chance in 1990s when internet started to pick up lot of traction. And this time IBM did not screwed up. Under Louis V. Gerstner, IBM refocused its strategy that brought it back from brink of disaster.
